Tips on How I Fought Through My Postpartum Depression

With most of the US under quarantine due to COVID-19, I felt like I had to share some ways that helped me fight through my Postpartum Depression that you can still implement under quarantine. Fighting through it can be made worse with the fear and uncertainty that a lot of people are feeling.

1 – Get outside! Take a walk every chance you get! I know for me, it was so hard to even think about getting out. I had to fight through my anxiety of leaving the house for sure. Once I did, it got easier and easier, and our walks became longer and longer. Exercising releases those happy hormones, and I always felt better after.

2 – Call your friends and family! I called my sister EVERY SINGLE DAY. Every day I’d call just to hear her reassuring voice that everything will be OK, and that this will pass. She told me a quote that I recited to myself every single morning: “Either the day controls you, or you control the day” For whatever reason this really hit home for me. I could be in control.

3 – Drive around…and around and around. Wherever! Just go. Especially on those rainy days. I would listen to my music while my daughter napped and it felt so freeing. I discovered many parks on my drives. I would then take long walks with my daughter there on a nicer day!

4 – Create zones in your home. Once again, great advice from my amazing sister! I created places within our home with different activities. For example, in the “Mom & Dad’s Room Zone”, I had a play mat set up with a mirror where she could see herself and high contrast cards for her to look at. In the “Baby Room Zone”, I set up a bunch of stuffed animals and books to read to her. You can make the zones work for you! If she got fussy, we would switch zones and reset. I felt like this really helped on those cloudy and rainy days where you just kind of feel “stuck” sometimes.

5 – Take long hot showers EVERY DAY! Some of you may think I’m crazy for emphasizing the “every day” thing. But when my nerves were frayed and broken, it was hard for me to even imagine trying to accomplish a simple thing like showering. Take one EVERY DAY. Lay your baby on their play mat if they aren’t able to roll over yet. Strap them into a bouncy chair or whatever you have so that you can still see them. I felt like more of a human after.

6 – Open all of the curtains to let the sunlight in! Every curtain in every room was open at all times. If it were a cloudy and rainy day, I would turn all lights on, too. It helped to make our small space feel just a little bigger. I just felt so much more alive when the sun came in.

These are just a few tips that I hope will help you if you are battling Postpartum Depression or the baby blues!
